09 July 2018. The 2018 Down Syndrome Gymnastics World Championships were held in Bochum (Germany) from the 05th – 09th July 2018. SA Gymnastics was represented by Charles Phillips from KZN, with Allan Chadwick being the South African coach for the event.
Charles performed extremely well at this, his 3rd DSIGO (Down Syndrome International Gymnastics Organisation) World Championships.
3 years ago in Motara (Italy), Charles won a Bronze medal in the Senior High Bar Final. This year saw a stronger, more determined Charles compete and his hard work and diligence paid off!
On Saturday the 07th July, Charles came 3rd overall in the Senior Men’s division of the 2018 DS Gymnastics World Championships with a total score of 79.300.
To make matters even more interesting, Charles also qualified for 5 apparatus finals on Sunday afternoon.
Charles competed incredibly well in the apparatus finals on Sunday the 08th July 2018, winning the following medals:
- Gold Medal on Parallel Bars
- Silver Medal for Rings
- Silver Medal Vault
- Silver Medal on Horizontal Bar
Charles is currently the only gymnast with disability in South Africa who is representing South Africa at international events.
This medal haul is a phenomenal achievement for Charles and SAGF are truly proud of both Charles and his coach, Allan.
