15 May 2018. The 14th Continental African Championships & Youth Olympic Qualifier for WAG & MAG took place from the 09th May 2018 – 12th May 2018, at the Swakopmund Dome in Namibia. The event featured two disciplines competitions, namely the Women’s Artistic and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics.
The Dome Swakopmund was filled with 7 African countries that are affiliated with the FIG and member federations of the Union Africaine De Gymnastique (African Gymnastics Union) commonly known as UAG, and a total of 80 artistic gymnasts ranging from Juniors to Seniors competed at the 2018 African Champs.
The South African Team first taste of success, came through the Women’s Junior Team which included Lisa Conradie, Nkazimlo Matyolo, Erin Bell, Zelme Daries and Zoe Julies. This promising young team amassed a total of 136.500 and were pipped at the post by the Egyptian Junior Women’s Team who scored a total of 138.500.
As tough as it was in the Junior Women’s Individual competition that consisted of a total of 22 gymnasts, the South African Team managed to grab some medals. South Africa’s Lisa Conradie was the star RSA performer in this section. In a closely contested Individual All Round competition, Lisa began her quest for medals by winning Silver overall. In the apparatus finals, Lisa bagged 2 Gold Medals for Uneven Bars and Beam, Silver Medal for floor and Bronze Medal for vault.

Nkazimlo Matyolo, Erin Bell and Zoe Julies all qualified for apparatus finals.
Nkazimlo came 4th in the Uneven Bars, Zoe Julies 4th inn Floor apparatus final while Erin Bell was 5th in the Beam apparatus finals. In the All-Around junior section Nkazimlo was 4th , Erin 13th place, 15th for Zelme and 16th spot for Zoe.
In the Senior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition, approximately 20 gymnasts from across Africa took part. LIke their junior counterparts, the Team SA senior girls won the Silver Medal in the Women’s Team Competition, scoring total of 141.000 behind Egypt who took 1st place. An outstanding performance form Angela Maguire in the All Round Individual competition saw Angela winning Bronze Medal overall.
Caitlin Rooskrantz competed only on her strongest event, the Uneven Bars. After qualifying to go through to the Bar Apparatus Finals, Caitlin competed very strongly and brought back a Gold Medal for this apparatus with a score of 13.067. Just behind Caitlin was Caitlyn Kelly who bagged a Bronze Medal in the Uneven Bars apparatus final with score of 12.433; behind Egypt’s Farah Hussein who settled in the 2nd spot.
Team SA Duo Lukisha Schalk and Gabriella Murray tied for 1st place in the Senior Women’s Floor Finals, with a score of 12.233. Gabriella Murray also won Bronze medal for Vault while Lukisha Schalk bagged home another Gold Medal in the Beam apparatus final with score of 12.200, Angela Maguire finished in 4th spot at the Beam Apparatus final.

Competition in the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics for Juniors, consisted of 19 gymnasts from across Africa. The SA Men’s Team (Ruan Lange, Riccardo Colandrea, Luke James and Andrew Flynn) won Silver Medal for Team competition, with a scoring of 208.650. Solid performances from Ruan Lange ensured Ruan of the Bronze overall medal.

For the Individual All-Around Men’s Competition, Ruan finished 3rd while Riccardo was 7th . Luke finished 8th , following right after him was Andrew Flynn who finished 9th place.
