06 November 2017. The 2017 Olympic Hopes Cup was held from 2-4 November 2017 in Liberec, Czech Republic. The South African Team participated at this Artistic Gymnastics international event, we had Men’s Artistic and Women’s Artistic gymnasts competing.
2nd November saw the Men’s Artistic competition proceeding, and our MAG gymnasts (Aidan Maguire, Riccardo Colandrea, Ruan Lange & Luke James) were all set ready to represent South Africa. These 4 gymnasts first participated in a qualification round, which also served as the all-around final. The results of this competition determined which individuals participated in the event finals. Then the top eight gymnasts qualified per event, and each country was limited to two gymnasts per apparatus final.
The MAG Team conquered and all 4 of them, made it to the finals. James Luke made finals for Floor apparatus, position 7th with final score of 12.30. Riccardo Colandrea made finals in the Pommel Horse apparatus, he made tie with a gymnast from Poland (Izdebski Milosz) position 7th with final score of 11.10. Ruan Lange made finals in Rings apparatus ending 7th position with final score of 11.90, he also made finals in the Vault apparatus position 7th with score of 12.03.
Prevailing the most was MAG gymnast, Aidan Maguire who made finals to about 4 different apparatus. Apart from qualifying and making it to the finals, Aidan won 2 Bronze medals at this 2017 Olympic Hopes Cup.
Aidan secured his first Bronze medal at the Rings apparatus, he came 3rd place with a total score of 12.70. His second Bronze medal was won at the Horizontal Bar apparatus, position 3rd with a final score of 11.55.
Furthermore, the WAG Team (Caitlyn Kelly, Nkazimlo Matyolo, Tamsyn Bessit, Zelme Daries, Erin Bell & Zoe Julies) also represented SA Gymnastics to their best ability.
Caitlyn Kelly was the more dominant gymnast and secured her spot in the finals for Uneven Bars apparatus and Floor. Caitlyn made it to finals and placed 7th with final score of 11.75 in the Uneven Bars, for the Floor finals she placed 8th with final score of 10.60. She ranked South Africa at overall position 13th in the Women’s Artistic competition, with her final score of 47.800.
