10^th African Gymnastics Championships

Walvis Bay. (NAM) 28 February - 13 March 2010

The 10^th African Championships gets underway in Walvis Bay, Namibia over the coming weekend. The event which doubles as the Qualifying Continental Event for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore will host national gymnasts from South Africa as well as representation from sixteen African teams.

The African Championships are held every second year and feature the six main disciplines: namely Artistic Men, Artistic Women, Trampoline, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Aerobics & Tumbling which was introduced for the first time in 2006.

The event will feature top South African Gymnasts such as Women’s Artistic Gymnasts Jennifer Khwela and Chantel Swan who competed at the 2009 Artistic World Championship. The event also features World Ranked number 7 Tumbling Gymnast, Bianca Budler who also reached the Women’s Tumbling Final in the 2009 Tumbling World Championships. Lucky Radebe, a Trampoline athlete and Finalist at the World Games will also compete. With such talent, the South African Team promises a good medal haul.

While the event features top gymnasts, it also has a strong development angle. With the Youth Olympic Games round the corner, the limelight will also shine on our younger athletes. Athletes such as Makeeda Phekani (WAG), Tiaan Grobler (MAG), Aimee van Rooyen (RHY) who recently competed in Canada and Bronze medallist at the 2009 World Age Group Competition in Tumbling vie for their slots into the Youth Olympic Games. It will be exiting to see these athletes in action in their quest to develop into stronger athletes.

International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) President, Professor Bruno Grandi, the First Vice President as well as Medical Chairperson, Dr Michel Leglise and the Deputy Secretary General, Nicolas Buompane will also be present at the competition.

The event expects to host at least 400 participants in the six different codes.
