Gym for All » Gauteng National Gymnaestrada a hit

18 August 2010. The Gauteng National Gymnaestrada held from 7 – 9 August 2010 turned out to be a massive success with a total of 5 provinces participating. The event also celebrated the recent partnership between dance4life, a non profit organisation that mobilises and unites young people to push back HIV and AIDS 4life.

Also in attendance was the Finance Chancellor for the Embassy of Switzerland, and his wife who thoroughly enjoyed the National Gymnaestrada. Switzerland will host the next World Gymnaestrada in Lausanne in July 2011, in which South Africa will take part.

SAGF and dance4life launched their partnership with the dance4life crew leading their drill to a group of 400 gymnast who represented the 5 provinces present. Needless to say, the participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves and received the message enthusiastically. (See video)

One of the highlights of the event was the Gala event which gave tribute to the outstanding women in the gymnastics fraternity, namely Isabel van Achterbergh, former Rhythmic Programme Manager and choreographer. Mentee Patrick Mazibuko choreographed a performance in her honour where at the end, two participants presented her with flowers to show their appreciation.

Above all, the performances showed the hard work and dedication of the participants to put together quality performances that have led to a healthy competition been the provinces. This will only lead to the quality of the performances improving as time passes especially as the World Gymnaestrada draws close. Accordingly the world should prepare its self for Africa’s Magic at the World Gymnaestrada in July 2011 in Lausanne.
