18 March 2020. The Aerobics and Rhythmic Gymnastics African Championships was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from 10-17 March 2020. Despite the various challenges the RSA team faced leading up to the competition, their routines were clean, solid and returned home with medals for both Rhythmic and Aerobic competitions.
Well done to the Aerobics Juniors mixed pair Tshepiso Motone and Kutlwano Maine who attended their first International event whom received a silver medal, placing second. Tshepiso also received a silver medal for the Junior male category. Well done to Senior Aerobic gymnast Demi Botha who also received a silver medal, placing second for the Women’s individual category.
The African Championships held in Egypt is the qualification for the African continent for the Olympic Games 2020.
We wish to congratulate the seniors for a job well done for their results: Lilica Burger placed third in the all-around competition and third place for club apparatus receiving two bronze medals. The senior gymnasts including Lilica Burger, Shannon Gardiner, Azra Dewan and Erin Wakefield received a Silver medal for placing second overall in the Senior Team Competition. Additionally, the Senior Group which included Kerryn Cowper, Karishma Naicker, Morongoa Moklohane, Magreet van Wyk and Hannah Cawood received a silver medal, placing 2nd overall for the Senior Group Competition.
Well done to the Rhythmic Juniors for their results:
Lebo Maake received a bronze medal for ribbon while Yulia Galukhin received bronze medals for rope, ball and club apparatus as well as third place overall. Additionally, the Junior team which included Lebo Maake, Yulia Galukhin and Kisha Samson received silver medals for placing second in the Junior Team Competition. The South African Gymnastics Federation could not have been prouder of both Rhythmic and Aerobic teams.
