07 November 2019. The SA Gymnastics Federation SAGF will be showcasing the best of South African gymnastics at the Inaugural SA Gymnastics Perfect 10 event on Friday, 13 December 2019 at the Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria.

The South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) is hoping to be awarded the title of Federation of the Year by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture at the annual SA Sports Awards this Sunday, where they have been nominated once again in this category in 2018.

To celebrate all it has achieved this year, SAGF will host the inaugural South African Gymnastics Perfect 10 event. This event forms part of a week of gymnastics action, featuring the AUSC Region 5 international competition as well as the SRSA SA Schools Summer Games competition.

“We are incredibly excited to host the South African Gymnastics Perfect 10 this year and show South Africa how amazingly talented our home-grown gymnasts are,” said Anne Vermaak, SAGF CEO.

“Not only will the event include the competition element, but it will also showcase gymnastics demonstration, SA Got Talent 2015 winner DJ Arch, and fun activities and prizes for the entire family.”

“With Caitlyn Rooskrantz qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, gymnastics is back on South Africa’s radar again, and we want to build on that excitement.”

The South African Gymnastics Perfect 10 event will be made up of an individual ‘Perfect 10’ competition as well as a team competition.

Perfect 10

Previously, gymnastics routines were judged out of 10, and all gymnasts performed their routines aiming to score the Perfect 10 from judges. Today, all gymnasts start with their execution score on 10 with points deducted for every mistake. Their difficulty score is then added to that resulting in scores over 10.

“For the South African Gymnastics Perfect 10 event, we are going back to the Perfect 10 scoring,” said Vermaak. “Each gymnast, irrespective of discipline, will be judged solely on execution of one routine, to try and obtain a score closest to the Perfect 10.”

Team competition

All participating gymnasts will be divided into five teams – Blue Cranes, Meerkats, Zebras, Gazelles and Cheetahs. They will be adjudicated by celebrity judges as well as qualified gymnastics judges. The points the competitors receive will count towards their own points tally, as well as their teams’.

The South African Gymnastics Federation governs nine gymnastics disciplines, including Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Aerobic Gymnastics, Acrobatic Gymnastics, Trampoline and Tumbling, Rope Skipping, Gym for All and Parkour.

Attendees will be treated to some of the best gymnastics South Africa has to offer, as some gymnasts preparing for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and others preparing to defend their World placings.

The SA Gymnastics Perfect 10 event will start at 16h00 and entry to the event will be free of charge and promises to be a fun affair for the entire family.
